Gold movie true story is of 1948 Summer Olympics, when India just got the independence. It explains resistances and outbreaks faced by then hockey players. The movie portrays the true story of victory among the swirling turmoil of riots.Gold movie Akshay Kumar portrays a role of a hockey player-cum-coach Tapan Das who had won 3 gold medals under British rule and now is intended to bring forth a hockey team made in free India and represent it in 1948 Summer Olympics. But he and his team faces obstacles and movie is about them.Balbir Singh was the flag bearer at the opening ceremony of the Olympics. The President of Finland released pigeons and there were droppings on the flag. As Balbir Singh was about to wipe off the dropping when an Olympic official patted him and said,“You are going to be champs again. We believe, in Finland, that when a bird ‘dirties’ your left boot, nothing can stop you from succeeding!” Singh’s jersey number was 13. Our man was told that 13 might be unlucky. This is what he had to say:
“In most Indian languages, the number 13 is pronounced as ‘tera’ — meaning God. I can’t be luckier!” And not only did India win the match, they also scored 13 goals. They got the Gold medal home. Balbir Singh is responsible for three Olympic Gold medals and two Silver ones in 1958 and 1962 Asian Games at Tokyo and Jakarta respectively. As it seems in the trailer, the creators of the movie have taken the liberty to make Akshay Kumar’s character look like a Bengali.

Gold’ isn’t just a film on hockey, it’s also a period film that recreates an era long forgotten. More than that, it’s reminds us of the painful reality of partition and how that brutally tore apart our nation. The production design and costumes, which play an integral part in depicting the era, are top notch. The cinematography and the background score stand out with excellent finesse and technique. The hockey matches create a great amount of thrill, and even though you know the end result, you will find yourself sitting at the edge of your seat and rooting for team India all the way.
The first half is slow paced and the film takes quite a while to establish the characters and set up the plot. The editing could have been a lot more taut and the narrative could have done without the songs Chad Gayi Hai and Naino Ne Baandhi. The emotions run high in the film, as a handful of Indians put their personal differences aside to make the country proud. As we witness India winning its first gold as a free nation, you also see the Pakistani players cheer for Indians playing on the field. Moments like this, make ‘Gold’ a film which is more just a sports drama.
Gold made Rs 25 crore on its first day of release, when it clashed at the box office with John Abraham’s Satyameva Jayate, which brought in an impressive Rs 20 crore. Gold suffered a big drop in its second weekend, when it made less than Rs 10 crore on the day after release. As the table stands, Gold has become 2018’s eighth film to cross this milestone, following Padmaavat, Sony Ki Titu Ki Sweety, Raid, Baaghi 2, Raazi, Race 3 and Sanju. Taran also pointed out that with so many films being able to make Rs 100 crore, the figure ‘is no longer a measure of a film’s success.
